MRI Results

Good news and bad news… The results are in from Jason’s MRI. He has an acoustic neuroma tumor behind his left ear. The tumor is 1.2 inches in diameter (3 cm) so it’s considered a large tumor. It’s pressing on his nerves which has caused deafness in the left ear and unfortunately once the nerves are damaged, the hearing is gone for good. The tumor is pressing on his cerebellum so it’s best to remove it because this type of tumor continues to grow and can cause serious facial paralysis and balance issues if not removed. The good news is this type of tumor is almost always benign. It’s hard to differentiate between the good news and the bad news but we are very aware that this could have been cancerous and it’s most likely not. Unfortunately due to his age (40) and the size of the tumor they want to operate to remove it. The neurosurgeon will remove 90% of the tumor and hopes that by cutting off the blood supply the tumor will not continue to grow. If it does than he will have to have radiation to stop the growth of the remaining tumor.

The surgery will take up to 10 hours. He’s come to terms with what has to happened and what needs to happen so that’s good. Of course, he’s scared since it is a major surgery and just knowing that they need to cut through his skull is probably the scariest part of all. We looked up his neurosurgeon and thank god he seems to be one of the best neurosurgeons in Denver. He has been listed as a top doctor in the Denver 5280 magazine for the last 5 years which is impressive. You don’t get on that list unless you are an excellent doctor in your field. So that’s about it. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers for me. He’s my everything.
