Hi all, as most of you know we have been going through our own process of trying to get our son Owen evaluated. At this point in time we can’t give a definite YES that he has Asperger’s Syndrome without a proper diagnosis which the first part of the evaluation is in June and the second part is in September but we do know that something is “unique” about him. Regardless of the outcome of this evaluation I will always support research on Autism and spectrum disorders. I have a number of friends who have children with Autism and AS so it’s not just our families concern.
I signed up for the walk last year and actually had to cancel because apparently I had a number of in-laws against me who would not donate to the cause and I didn’t come up with enough money in time for the walk. That was heartbreaking to feel so alone in my concerns for my son. This prompted me to get a professional diagnosis for my child. Does a diagnosis really make it more acceptable to believe that he is different? In reality a diagnosis doesn’t change a single thing about our lives. He is who he is with or without AS and whatever causes him to have meltdowns and not be able to control himself socially is my main concern. All I want to do is find out what is different with my son and help him so life isn’t as frustrating as it has been.
This subject can bring me to tears because I love my son so much. I don’t know if my in-laws are afraid of him having AS because in their minds it would mean he’s not perfect. You know? Or I am not sure if they truly understand that it doesn’t change a thing about him, he’ll always be Owen no matter what. In the end if he does have AS my hopes are that the professionals and the school can help him through rough times instead of sending him to the office because he’s considered a bad kid who acts out.
Anyhow, I can go on and on about this but I won’t. I just wanted to let everyone know that April is Autism Awareness month!
